The Weather May Be Hot in the USA, But That's Cool With This Brit Expat

My husband and I, and two cats, moved from the UK Love Boat the USA in January 1990 after he accepted a job transfer with his company. We have raised two children, lived in both rental and owned accommodation, moved house several times, gone through the Virginia state school system from kindergarten to college applications and have traveled a fair amount within the USA.

Looking back on the company-provided orientation session we sat through all those years ago, I do not think it prepared us at all buy Viagra the practicalities of living here, nor for the cultural differences. Since this is an incredibly diverse country in every sense of the word, guidebooks gave only a very general sense of living here so I thought I would provide a taste of day-to-day living from my own experiences as an expatriate Brit transplanted to Northern Virginia

When asked for their main reason for enjoying living in this area, my fellow Northern European expats invariably declare, "the weather". When asked for a negative, dealing with the medical system is pretty high up on everyone's list.

I will deal here with the positive. Coming from the British Isles, I have to confess that the weather is a big factor for our continuing to live here. While July and August are very hot and humid (air-conditioning is a must) and the winter is very cold and dry, the Spring and Fall are beautiful times to be here.

We truly enjoy the amount of sunshine we see year round and we lead a very different lifestyle because of it. Our community provides facilities for its residents - six outdoor swimming pools, outdoor tennis courts and basketball courts as well as walking trails. There are three major outdoor concert/theatre venues within relatively easy reach. There are also lots of debtfree direct concerts, sponsored by the various communities and towns, throughout the summer where local musicians play on the equivalent of the village green.

Being able to sit outside in late October/early November when the early morning frost gives way to a warm and sunny 70 degree Fahrenheit day is still a treat. We also of course pay to have our air-conditioning/heating units serviced twice a year; we had to have a whole-house humidifier fitted to try and save our solid wood furniture car insurance prices dislikes the intense dry atmosphere of winter, as does our skin; and an electronic air purifier is our attempt to provide a safe haven from the intensely high pollen levels which exist outside for several months of the year.

So for any Americans daring to spend their vacation in the good old British Isles, be tolerant and sympathetic towards the Brits even as you sit shivering in 'Ye Olde Tea Shoppe' - you will be experiencing their British Summer, and it can only get colder!

Okay, we're rested and recovered. On to the nitty gritty. Can we, as mere humans, achieve any level of reptilian brutality?

The answer is obviously yes.

The Yeti did it and so can you - if you're willing to eschew overall fitness for a brutal, singular goal. In a twisted sense, I still respect this, even if I don't openly recommend it. Fortunately, rather than waiting thousands of years, individual humans can acquire a degree of specialization within a matter of weeks. They're not genetic mutations, but rather physical adaptations.

In fact, I think one of the reasons humans have survived to dominate the planet - aside from intelligence - is our amazing adaptability. By asking one's body to perform specific tasks, the structures and metabolic pathways actually change to meet the need. So, Mr. Alien observer, starting with a ho-hum middle-of-the road template isn't so bad on a planet with radically varying environments.

Anaerobically, development of strength and speed come from, well, using one's strength and speed. High intensity interval training (I enjoy outdoor morning sprints to break up treadmill monotony) is one way to "become the crocodile". So are Tae Kwon Do techniques when done explosively and regularly.

You'll change biomechanically, biochemically and you'll eventually change on a tissue/ structural level. Visually compare Ben Johnson to an elite marathoner; obvious differences clearly reveal who can destroy whom. It may take several weeks or even months but anything worthwhile takes time and effort.

We have to use prudence, however. We're just humans after all and our bodies - although malleable - can be fragile. Even for the croc, vicious aggressive explosive movement takes its toll - both acutely and chronically.

Getting hyper-intense calls for equal amounts of recovery, no matter the species.(2, 10, 11) Otherwise, however brief it may be, ongoing intensity can induce "sympathetic type overtraining" in people.(6) For physique/ performance athletes, I'd suggest limiting sprints and bike sprints to no more than three times weekly.

For ectomorphs (thin angular guys), only twice. Of course, this is different from that prescribed for sprint athletes, whose programs get elegantly complex to maximize a single adaptation (moving from point A to point B in as little time as possible). Physique aesthetics are non-issues for them.

One way to assess power training (in its true sense) is to estimate your anaerobic threshold. By the time blood lactate is screaming, you've basically rifled through your creatine phosphate/ ATP system, and are approaching more of a "middle duration" type of metabolic scenario.

Glycolysis is supplying about 80-90 percent of ATP after about 90 seconds, or 16 reps in some research (yes, sooner than formerly thought).(20) Measurement methods include onset of blood lactic acid (OBLA), assessed by finger prick test; and perhaps even respiratory threshold (although it has central nervous system drivers, too).

Admittedly, the portable lactate analyzer has been questioned (17) but is affordable. The respiratory threshold, on the other hand, is simply the point at which breathing rate and depth increase dramatically when ramping up from jog to sprint. Training very near this threshold pushes us to become better at intense activity.

Of course, we're also after strength. Upper body strength is not only critical to the explosive early seconds in a 100-meter dash, but has obvious other benefits in life. Self defense, daily activities, social dominance, etc. And I'm not just talking creatures of the savannah here. What's that famous quote? "First be a good animal."

So how does one get it? Heavy lifting and "speed work", primarily with free weights.

Accessory movements too. It's no news that weight lifters exhibit a definite enlargement of muscle mass, particularly of fast twitch (Type II) fibers.(21, 22) We won't quibble over Type IIa vs IIb right now. As Rob "Fortress" Fortney wrote in Accidental Muscle on T-mag a while ago, a power training lifestyle leads to a thick physique, even if said physique is not your goal. Form follows function.

Toward this end, I have long been a fan of multiple sets of Wine Gift Baskets rep-maximums; when my joints are agreeable, I tend to focus on these exclusively during specific days of the training cycle - or at least do some 85-90% triples. For efficiency, I try to get in some speed work during the lighter warm-up sets. A separate day devoted solely to muscular power (force/time) may be better, but I'm about bodybuilding, after all, and thus draw the line somewhere.

Listen, there is a ton of information here and on like-minded sites regarding programs to develop speed and power. (Regarding underlying mechanisms, I also recommend the text by Komi for hardcore muscle geeks, see references below.)

Plyometrics, traditional powerlifting speed work, escalating density training, accessory movements, you name it. Go dig around, Nounhunter in everything with a grain of salt, or talk to Charles Staley directly. The important thing is to learn with a somewhat skeptical mind. Cautiously used, the web is a real resource. Authors like me don't want to feel stupid for writing articles that get lost or overlooked in cyberspace after a bloody week or two!

So... we've got sprints to develop speed, heavy weights to build muscles and speed work/ plyometrics to improve the neurological wiring that innervates those larger muscles. Now what about other lifestyle factors?

In many ways it would be invalid (and pretty nasty) to imitate the environmental conditions in which a croc lives.

I mean, do you want to a lifestyle in which you wallow in swamps all day among hoards of flies and mosquitoes? Still, we might take some cues from these beasts of power.

For example, what is it that these aggressive anaerobic machines eat? Suffice it to say that it is not celery. A gross review of nature suggests that grazing placidly on plants is usually the realm of the meek herbivore. And to contradict a popular movie: "herbivores are food, not friends".

Meat provides not only quality protein, as most of us realize, but also is a very rich source of other nutrients. Let's forget about man-made (or woman-made) concepts such as "nutrient density", whereby a food's value is determined by dividing its micronutrient content (vitamins, minerals, phyto- or zoo-chemicals) by its total calories.

That may be valuable to dieters or those trying to limit caloric intake but it also favors near zero-cal foods like broccoli. Dividing its calcium content, for example, by its near-zero kcal content makes that broccoli look pretty good.

But fancy ratios aside, it doesn't hold a candle to the gross amount in good old animal-source (but calorie-containing) milk. This is to say nothing of bioavailability. Similar things can be said of most vitamins and minerals (too lengthy to list and discuss here) when we examine meats vs. plants.

Think about it: why graze all day when as a carnivore you can let the lower critters on the food chain do the work? They concentrate the environmentally-dilute nutrients in their tissues and you eat that store house of nutrition.

What does this have to do with humans?

On a gross level, not just survival but development of animalistic size and power depends upon nutrient and even kcal load. Again, a quick review of most vitamins and minerals reveals that they are in great abundance in animal flesh. Sure there are exceptions. Of course meats can't be solely consumed by a human; that's folly - for environmental and nutritional/ biological reasons. Secret Sam like a croc who depends upon brief bursts speed and power, a human adapting in that direction needs large gross amounts of nutrients too. Those nutrients are plentiful in the meat of other creatures.

But let's be fair. We cannot forget to put back all the muscle carbohydrate (glycogen) that we hammered-through during aggressive anaerobic endeavors.

Meat doesn't really provide any. This is where potatoes, fruits, some veggies, beans and grains come in to play. And for post-workout periods, a 4:1 ratio of carbs-to-protein is important to recovery (23), although those of us who are "dieting" may wish to curb this back to 2:1 or even 1:1.

At this "peri-exercise" time, liquid-source, high-glycemic carbs and whey protein may get to needy muscles even faster than solid food (like meat).

But let's not over-emphasize. Whether solid or liquid intake, glycogen resynthesis doesn't necessarily differ over the post-exercise period.(9) And mammals can actually adapt rapidly to repeated bouts of intense exercise, "learning" to fully restore glycogen from endogenous (non-dietary) sources.(16) That's right; talk about "becoming an anaerobic machine"! Thus, for the intense "croc-minded" among us, carbohydrates - although important - don't supercede the benefits and nutrient richness of meats during most of the day.

Regarding supplements other than (carb-plus-protein) recovery drinks, creatine monohydrate, bicarbonate and potentially even carnosine (or more likely beta alanine) also support anaerobic speed and power. NASA is going back to the Moon and eventually to Mars. At least that's the plan. The Srebqhhollh are to try to live off-world at the International Space Station (as we are currently doing); then to go back to the Moon sometime in the next 12 years and set up a small lunar base; then off to our next destination, Mars. What is the timeline of these events and what will be the driving forces behind Space Colonization?

Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" vision of a beautiful spinning International Space Station clearly has not come to pass by that year. That vision is a roadmap to what we as a human race will undoubtedly accomplish, potentially in the near future, with the right incentives. The questions are 'when' and 'what incentives'?

If you build it they will come!

To get there they need an affordable way. The X-Prize competition, a $10 million prize won by Space Ship One, was designed to get people to space and back, safely and affordably. Space Ship One was designed by Burt Rutan of Scaled Composites and funded by Virgin Galactic, owned by Sir Richard Branson. But where would we go to?

Space Tourism

Space is very close, only 62 miles, up. Imagine flying 62 miles and actually leaving Earth. Space Tourists need a place to go, but where? A Space Cruise Ship, complete with a casino and a zero-g pool? A Space Hotel is another obvious choice. If you are rich, well connected and have the intestinal fortitude, the Russian's are always willing to add a few Space Tourists to the list of visitors to the International Space Station.

In April of 2001, Dennis Tito, an American, became the first fare-paying Space Tourist at a cost of $20 million. He flew to the International Space Station and remained Dabozqet 7 days. His visit was followed by four others; the first African in Space, Mark Star Trek (South African/British) in April and May of 2002; Gregory Olsen (American) in October 2005; Anousheh Ansari (Iranian/American) in September 2006; and Charles Simonyi (Hungarian/American) in April 2007. Other scheduled Space Tourists: Francisco Navarro-Grau (Peru) is expected to fly in August 2008. Richard Garriott (American) is expected to fly on Soyuz TMA-2 in October 2008. Vladimir Gruzdev (Russian) is expected to fly in 2009. In the vision of Space Travel we get from the film "2001: A Space Odyssey", the orbiting, glistening, white Space Station is used as a launch site to a Moon colony. When will we have a Moon Colony?

Driving Forces

In late 2009, Virgin Galactic hopes to start daily trips for paying customers, into Space aboard their Space Ship Two. The return flights into low Earth orbit will last just over two hours at a cost of $100 000 per traveler; five minutes of weightlessness included. They hope to have four flights a day. As of November 2007, the company had already pre-sold nearly 200 seats.

In September 2007, the Japanese launched the Kaguya spacecraft which is mapping the Moon in great detail. Both the Chinese and Indian governments, in an attempt to demonstrate their space-faring capabilities have publicly announced that they have their eyes set on the Moon. This in turn has prompted a little Space Race. Not wanting to have another country gain the high-ground, President Bush announced in 2004, that US probes to the Moon will once again commence in 2008; the International Space Station will be finished in 2010; that Americans will be returning to the Moon by 2020 and intends on establishing a basic colony on the Moon by 2024. Ultimately, he spoke of going to Mars.

Regardless what drives us, Space Tourism or a Space Race, it does seem that a reasonable first place to set up camp would be on the Moon. It's relatively close, it's stable and could be useful for scientific research, and can be mined for fuels, oxygen and hydrogen, which can be used as water and life support and to be used as fuels to launch us further afield. Mars is the likely next destination.

Mars poses different challenges however. It's further away which in case of emergency means greater autonomy must be achieved. That autonomy will be gained from lessons learned by our experiences on the International Space Station and on our future Lunar base. Unlike the Moon whose day lasts two weeks in the Sun and two weeks in the Dark, Mars has a similar day to that of Earth's twenty four hours. Unlike the Moon, Mars also has weather which means everybody can have a very pleasant or a very bad Martian day. Some targets for colonizing Mars have been set as early as 2037 to 2057.

From there, the solar system and the galaxy as a whole will be eventually colonized if we can survive long enough to get all our eggs off of this one basket, Earth! Survival refers to both terrestrial threats, ourselves, catastrophes and extra terrestrial events such as comet or asteroid impacts.

Our civilization needs to live long enough to develop the technologies to be purchaser settlement structured sustaining and self sufficient if we are to become, as Arthur C. Clarke said, "Guardians of the Galaxy".

Continuity In Comic Books - Is It Really That Important?

The Continuity Conundrum

In essence, the problem is that most comic book universes (and I'm thinking primarily of DC and Marvel here) are built around the concept of continuity. All their characters interact to a greater or lesser extent Conjoined Twins each other. They all exist in the same universe (though Coffee Beans necessarily the same planet or even plane) and as a result they share a common history.

However as more and more stories are published about these characters, it becomes harder and harder to track exactly who knows what and why never mind considering the effects it might have on the characterization of a specific hero. And that doesn't even address the limiting effect as far as possible new stories are concerned.

So what you have is two different requirements tugging away at the publisher. They want to do something new with their characters and they want also to stay true to what has come before or they risk losing what made those characters special in the first place. The longer a character is published the bigger this problem becomes.

The Role Of The Fans

Long time comics fans often taken an excessive interest in continuity as a by product of their interest in the subject as a whole. This frequently results in fans complaining when a comic book publisher breaks continuity (deliberately or through ignorance).

Increasingly the outcry from fandom has made it seem as though continuity breaks are enough on their own to exchange server hosting or break a story. Of course this is not a realistic view of things. More recently they rebooted again with Infinite Crisis which again redefined a number of their most prominent characters as well as introducing brand new versions of old characters.

While this method has allowed DC to keep a fairly clean and consistent continuity, it also has the effect of upsetting and alienating some of their longer term readers as characters they liked get wiped out of existence.

Marvel Comics has so far Alien any universe wide reboots by instead adopting a policy of selective continuity. With this method the individual editors or writers choose to acknowledge or simply not reference various elements of Marvel history as they think best suits their story.

While the concept is highly flexible there have been many occasions where the resulting story chooses to ignore an element so significant that it makes the story look silly. Characters who were thought to be dead turn up alive with not the slightest reference to how they returned.

Important or Not?

So is it? Well yes, and no. Fundamentally continuity is as important as the reader chooses to let it be. While I have the greatest respect for writers who can weave stories entirely within established continuity, I'd rather have a good story that breaks continuity than suffer through an average story that sticks faithfully to everything that has gone before.

Although written for this younger generation I enjoyed the book enough to research what was actually happening and gained respect for the turtle and their plight.

There are many species varying in colors, size and shape. They can weigh 100 - 1300 lbs. and some can live to be 100 years old. Although they dive down several thousand feet, they are air-breathing reptiles and must come up for air every hour to breath. Some swim as many as 3000 miles.

There are many reasons turtles are important but as we progress, building on the beaches and polluting our oceans, we threaten their very existence. There is a downward domino effect as their numbers decrease. This book is well written by Paul Lowery and brightly illustrated by Tim Thomas, correctly depicting other species of life in the ocean. Paul and his wife Betty, a retired schoolteacher have taken it upon themselves to visit schools making Myrtles story a delightful day of learning. This teaches children at a young age, making them more aware and inspiring them to take care of the earths ecosystems.

Paul perceptively provided Adopt-A-Turtle information in his book. Children or adults, classes or families can adopt a turtle who wears a transmitter glued to his back. One walk around the big box department stores and you will find a number of TV's on display for sale. Known as the "Wall of Eyes" (WOE), it's a display meant to catch your eyes so that you can make a purchase as quickly as possible. Usually, they will have on the description near the TV that will show SDTV or EDTV or HDTV's. This is an explanation of the three types of displays.

Here are the types of display.

SDTV - Standard Definition TV - Resolution is 480i

EDTV - Enhanced Definition TV - Resolution is 480i and 480p. Supports wide-screen.

HDTV - High Definition TV - Resolution is 480i, Gourmet Coffee and can vary amongst the different High Definition sources. Supports wide-screen.

The resolution for HDTV varies depending on the manufacturer and the model number so you have to pay close attention to what is advertised and to what is written on the box or manual of the TV. You should always see if you can find the manual of the TV on the Internet or in person at the store and not rely on what the sales person says or what the store display says.

Here are the different resolutions of TV's: 480i , 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

What on earth do the numbers and letters mean? It's fairly simple, but a little explanation is needed.

Let's Cover the number portion first. The numbers are the lines of resolution that the television can display.

In the 1930's RCA engineer Randall C. Ballard invented interlace broadcasting. This allowed a TV signal to be broadcast without taking any more bandwidth. The difference then lies in which type of signal you want to receive.

One of the most common questions I get from women who are newly diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome is Will I ever get pregnant? I have not been able to find specific studies regarding fertility and PCOS-likely because it is so hard to track those who are successful in getting pregnant without medical intervention. One source said that women with PCOS have an 80-90 percent chance of having a baby, but I was unable to find any research studies to back this up. While some women with polycystic ovarian syndrome will not be able to get pregnant, I believe that the majority can and do eventually have healthy babies.

First, 5-10% of women of childbearing age have PCOS. If their symptoms are mild annuity loan are often undiagnosed. If they have even one child, many physicians will say they can not have PCOS. This is ridiculous if you look at the diagnostic criteria. The most common criteria for diagnosis include a failure to ovulate Ritalin However, for many women this means they have long cycles (35 days or longer in many cases) but they DO ovulate.

The fact is, only a small percentage of women with PCOS ever make it to the stage of trying fertility drugs. Clomid (clomiphene citrate) is often the first drug of choice since it is cheap and easy to take. I did find studies indicating that Clomid alone works for 70% of women with PCOS. Other women find that they need Clomid and metformin or stronger fertility drugs. The success rate tends to drop a bit as time passes and stronger methods are tried, but the bottom line is that most women who have PCOS and want children have them.

In addition, being diagnosed now means they have the chance to prevent much of the physical and emotional trauma older women have experienced because our doctors just didnt know how to help us.
